Abstract
"This chapter examines the acoustic ecologies of digital games, particularly those of first-person shooters, through the lenses of concepts of artificiality, virtuality, and reality. Comparisons are made between the game acoustic ecology and acoustic ecologies outside the game world, and the question is posed: which is real and which is virtual, and, indeed, which aspects of the game’s acoustic ecology are real and which are virtual? The chapter suggests that part of the answer lies in the deeply personal and highly subjective nature of both virtuality and reality and, in order to illuminate this notion further in the context of sound, relevant concepts and ideas are made use of from theories of embodied cognition and the study of imagination."
